TUTOR GUIDE
PLAN AND CONDUCT TUTORING SESSIONS TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND CHALLENGING MATERIAL
Growth Mindset: A belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning. It emphasizes embracing challenges, persisting in the face of setbacks, and viewing failures as opportunities for growth.
Set specific and achievable goals with the student for their tutoring, recognizing that improvement comes with effort and practice.
Tutors should track progress against these goals and provide feedback for students to adjust their strategies and continuously improve.
GUIDE STUDENTS, INSTILL GOOD HABITS, AND FOSTER CONFIDENCE AND ABILITIES
Practice active listening, acting as a friend and confidante for the student. Check-in frequently, ask questions about school and experiences, and provide guidance when needed. Guide students in developing effective problem-solving strategies to tackle academic challenges. Help students improve their study skills, time management, and organizational techniques to enhance their learning outcomes and academic performance.
Seek permission before giving feedback and provide specific examples without being judgmental. Explain the impact of actions or behaviors and offer actionable suggestions for improvement.
Engage in self-reflection to understand your own reactions and improve interactions with the student. Consider ways to make tutoring sessions more engaging and positive for the student.
PROVIDE SUPPORT, BE A LISTENING EAR, AND ENCOURAGE STUDENTS
Cultural Awareness: Tutors can enhance cultural competence by developing a deep understanding and appreciation for the diverse cultural backgrounds of their students. They should actively educate themselves about the cultural norms, values, and traditions of the students they are tutoring, as well as the broader community they serve. This awareness enables tutors to avoid making assumptions, biases, or generalizations based on cultural differences and allows them to approach each student with sensitivity and respect.
Some ways that you can be culturally competent as a tutor include:
- Asking questions in a respectful manner
- Speaking to the parents to clarify their expectations
- Being open-minded and accommodating
- Don’t make assumptions about their experiences
- Leading with empathy and compassion
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) focuses on developing essential life skills such as self-awareness, empathy, and responsible decision-making.
SEL equips individuals with the emotional intelligence to manage emotions, build positive relationships, and thrive in various social settings, enhancing overall well-being and academic success.
